The weather in London is affected by the fact that England is an island. There is an unpredictability to London's weather because of this. Some things can be counted on, however - such as the fact that you should always have your umbrella with you when you go out. There is at least a small rain shower almost every day. It does not get very hot or very cold - although London did just experience a crippling snowstorm last week. This was the first such storm in over 18 years. Traditionally, winter averages 6° C (42° F) and are chilly. Spring and Fall are damp and unpredictable, with temperatures between 11° and 14° C (52°-59°F) - make sure you have a jacket with you! In the summer, you can expect to enjoy sunny, comfortable weather with 20°C (68° F) average temperatures. But look out for the occasional spike as high as 38° C (100° F), that's quite a scortcher!

This is why when they received 20cm of snow on February 2, 2009, the city was brought to a standstill. Twenty centimeters is the equivilant of approximately 8 inches. The entire public transportation system was unable to drive the streets. The few cars on the road were immediately caught up in traffic jams. February 3rd turned into a city-wide snow day because of lack of preparedness.
